National Night Out is organized by the police enforcement in each city. It gives the citizens an opportunity to get out to meet the neighbors, form groups for neighborhood watch, etc. The mayor, police dept and fire dept stop by. A neighbor has to volunteer to host it and go to the meetings. Last year my neighbor Kristen read about it in the local paper and we decided to start it on our block, and this year we continued and included the next small block. She is a teacher and had to meet her kids the same night, so she could not help this year, so I organized it all. It turned out great. The fire and police departments stop by with the swat vehicle and the police dog and the big fire truck and the kids get to climb all over. We BBQ and hang out with the neighbors. If you are interested in doing it next year in your neighborhood let me know and i can give you more information. It seems to be the first Tuesday in August each year.
